Here I’ll be sharing some money saving tips for new parents. Having a child is expensive.
I don’t think you truly realize until you become a parent just how much you spend on your kids. You have to spend money on diapers, clothes, food and more.
I remember thinking before we had our son that I would be that parent who would have xy & z just in case we needed it
The thing is you really don’t need to go all out. You don’t need all the fancy things.
I will say some of the things we had for our son were bought by friends and family. Which we were very grateful for.
But you really don’t need it all. Every baby is different.
If there is something you do need you can probably find it much cheaper or can probably get it for free. Here are some ways you can save some money.
Money Saving Tips
- If possible breast feed. This will save you a lot of money.
- Make your own baby food. We did this quite a few times and our son loved it. You can use whatever you have at home. Here are some ideas.
- Hold off on buying things until after the baby shower. Most of the time you’ll get a good amount of what you need at your baby shower
- Return things you don’t need. If you got an excess amount of something you know you won’t need return it for store credit.
- Join local Buy/Sell/Trade groups on Facebook. I’ve found a couple of baby items and clothes from people who no longer needed them for cheap. Keep an eye out.
- Shop at thrift stores and yard sales. You’d be surprised at the amount of things you get from yard sales that are practically new or have only been used a handful of times even at thrift stores. Our local Goodwill has baby clothes that are 1.99 or 2.99. That’s a heck of a good deal.
- Ask any of your mommy friends if they have any items they don’t use anymore. Most of the time there’s probably one or two things people are eager to get rid of.
- Buy generic items whenever possible. In my opinion the generic brand is sometimes just as good as the name brand.
- Buy a car seat that will grow with your child. I wish we would’ve done that. Lesson learned. We had to buy a booster car seat once our son outgrew the other one. Had I known they are some that could turn into a booster seat we would’ve bought that one to begin with.
- Try cloth diapers. I know it’s not for everyone, but I loved it. We used Thirsties brand. I will say there’s a learning curve to it.
- Skip out on the baby shoes! Seriously you don’t need them until they start to walk.
- Seek out stores that will buy used clothes and toys from you. We love to go to Once Upon a Child.

YES! I had to laugh at the shoe comment. My kids never wore shoes until they were walking outside. It’s too hard to keep them on their feet! Baby shoes are cute, but you can totally go without.
And great suggestion about the carseat. I never thought about that when we had our first.

Exactly and they will outgrow those shoes quickly anyways.
